Globe Telecom saw its mobile data traffic jump by 421% to 370 petabytes in the first three months of 2019 from 71 petabytes in the same quarter of 2016. This steady surge in mobile data traffic is mostly attributed to more customers streaming videos on their smartphones and tablets.

“Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” bags Grand Jury Prize for Best Picture at 67th FAMAS Awards
Epic Lav Diaz musical celebrates a new noir in Philippine cinema
“Ang Panahon ng Halimaw” (Season of the Devil), a movie by celebrated filmmaker Lav Diaz and co-produced by Globe Studios, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Best Picture at the recently held 67th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards.
The almost 4-hour epic, which stars Piolo Pascual and Shaina Magdayao, was a complete departure from the usual masterpieces of Diaz that cinephiles have associated with his body of work. For “Ang Panahon ng Halimaw,” Diaz effectively mixed his usual austere aesthetics with powerful dialogues set in unaccompanied live “rock opera” fashion to tell a melodramatic story of a society beset of authoritarianism, repression and violence.

The Globe team gathers several plastic bags full trash during the Boracay beach clean up |
In support of the government’s call for responsible and sustainable tourism, Globe Telecom joined the week-long celebration of Boracay’s rehabilitation aimed at encouraging residents, tourists, and other stakeholders to be more environmentally conscious.
Almost 300 participants from the Globe Store in Boracay, Boracay Foundation Inc., Boracay Inter- agency task force, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, Team Boracay Cyclist, Philippine National Police, Malay Solid Waste, and Asean Centre for Biodiversity worked together to ensure that the country’s favorite summer getaway retains its pristine condition. The team gathered 32 bags of plastic waste and trash scattered along the popular White Beach where local and foreign tourists often converge.
At the same time, Globe put up an Eco Booth in D’mall where anyone can exchange their plastic bags with eco bags to encourage a more sustainable practice.
“Boracay has always been very close to the hearts of every Filipino. Recently, it became the center of everyone’s attention. As Filipino Citizens, it is our responsibility to help out and contribute in our shared purpose to rehabilitate Boracay. Beyond business, we will help make the island a safe and sustainable ecotourism destination through replicable and scalable solutions,” said Globe Senior Vice President for Consumer Mobile Business, Issa Guevarra-Cabreira.
Six months prior to Love Boracay, Globe, in partnership with Manila Water Foundation, has initiated several sustainable long term rehabilitation activities for Boracay such as the construction of a communal septic tank in Sitio Ilaya, Barangay Balabag and the provision of two months worth of Virgomin organic water treatment for septic tanks to all 4,000 households.
These efforts were aimed to ensure that locals, especially the low income households, are presented with options on how to contribute to the rehabilitation of the island through proper septage containment and management.
Alongside the sanitation projects, Globe, together with Save Philippine Seas, has conducted a three-day workshop on Marine Biodiversity attended by local business owners, students and teachers. The workshop focused on ways to protect marine life by adopting sustainable approaches to business operations such as reducing the use of single-use plastic.
Since 2012, Globe has been actively helping Boracay with its environmental initiatives such as marine life protection, offshore clean-up training, coral reef planting, support for conservation efforts by local stakeholders, and raising environmental awareness among the youth and local residents.

Globe Telecom’s strong mobile performance disproves global telco market prediction of revenue downfall
Globe Telecom was able to overcome global market predictions of a financial slowdown in the telecommunications industry after its overall service revenues rose steadily in the past five years. This was propelled by innovative mobile strategies such as customized mobile plans and promos, wider content offerings, and streamlined customer experience.
Back in 2013, analysts from Ovum, London-based independent consultancy firm specializing in telecommunications, predicted that no other region in the world but Africa will see revenue growth at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) above 3% between 2012 and 2018. It added that service revenues of operators globally will contract in 2018 for the first time in the history of mobile industry.
With strong mobile strategies in place, Globe witnessed a 9.1% CAGR for its overall service revenues from 2014 to 2018, outperforming its main competitor and the local telco industry during the same period. Globe Telecom’s CAGR in the past five years was also higher than the 5.6% it recorded from 2009 to 2013. CAGR shows the rate of return of an investment over a certain period of time.
“We are proud that our strategy of disrupting the telco business model delivered consistent financial results in the past five years. With our unwavering commitment to bring our customers better quality of experience, we will continue making positive strides in the ICT and digital space. We will step up our efforts on managing costs, growing revenues, and driving efficiencies to fuel further our digitalization efforts for our customers,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.
The company’s rapid growth in service revenues is key in fueling investments for better innovations in digital solutions, wider access to content, more bundled offers, and better quality of user experience. Geared to meet the customer demand for more bandwidth-intensive content, Globe has increased its capital expenditure (capex) guidance to P63 billion in 2019.
Globe in 2018 started delivering cloud-based intelligent omni-channel routing and interactions management to boost customer experience. Amdocs, a provider of software and services to communications and media companies, collaborated with Amazon Web Services to enable Globe to deliver effortless experience across all touchpoints, including web portal, self-service and mobile applications, as well as social media and messaging platforms. This is powered by capabilities like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and a unified agent desktop that enable Globe frontliners to assist customers efficiently.
Globe also built a Facebook Messenger bot called Gie of Globe to communicate with its large customer base in a more personalized way. Gie of Globe is a personalization of a digital-savvy Filipina designed to be highly relatable and smart enough to know when a customer service experience needed an additional human touch. Meanwhile, Globe Platinum customers have exclusive access to Thea, a virtual concierge that provides assistance for day-to-day requests on reservations, bookings, events, and other services.
The company also continues to partner with world-class content providers with offers that cater to key customer passion points in video, games and electronic sports (eSports), music, e-commerce, as well as life and productivity services.
Globe offers both affordable and top-of-the-line smartphones from popular device makers like Apple, Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo to speed up the adoption of LTE handsets. Matching these devices are value-for-money data prepaid promos such as GoWATCH & PLAY, and customizable postpaid plans like ThePLAN, which allows its customers to rightsize their plan based on their data and content needs. These efforts have enabled Globe to become one of the fastest-growing and best-performing telcos in the world.

GLOBE ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER 2019 RESULTS: SHARP RISE IN PROFIT MARGINS; EBITDA MARGIN OF 55% GLOBE SPENT P8.8 BILLION IN CAPEX WITH MAJORITY FOR ITS NETWORK, REPRESENTING 24% OF GROSS SERVICE REVENUES
Globe continues to invest in its network to support the increasing demand for data services of its customers. For the first three months of 2019, Globe spent around P8.8 billion in capital expenditures or 24% of topline revenues. About 68% of the total expenditures for this period was for data-related services.
Globe closed the first three months of 2019 with consolidated service revenues1 of P36.0 billion, up 13% from a year ago and 3% higher from prior quarter. This was mainly fueled by sustained increase in data usage across all data-related services and products, including the wide array of content offerings, through the Company’s partnerships with global content providers.
Mobile revenues for the period grew close to P27.0 billion, up 11% from the same period of 2018 and 4% higher from the previous quarter, mostly coming from the Prepaid brands. From a product perspective, mobile data revenues amounted to P16.5. billion for the first three months of the year, due to the surge in consumer spending on mobile data, given the rising popularity of promos that provide the best surfing deals. Mobile data continued to be the top contributorto the Company’s total mobile business, and now accounts for 61% of gross service revenues from 47% a year ago.Globe is now reaping the benefits of its modernized 4G/LTE network that allows more of its customers to experiencefaster content downloads, smoother music and video streaming, and richer web browsing experiences, thus the mobile data traffic growth from 180 petabytes in same period of 2018 to 370 petabytes this period. Meanwhile, mobile voice and mobile SMS revenues for the period just ended posted P6.3 billion and P4.2 billion, lower year-on-year by 15% and 22%, respectively.
In view of the new regulatory requirement of one (1) year extension of prepaid load validity, Globe closed the first three months of 2019 with a total mobile subscriber base of 83.5 million, up 13% from the fourth quarter of 2018.
Globe’s home broadband business posted a robust 21% increase from a year ago and 3% against the prior quarter to reach P5.2 billion this period. Home broadband’s resilient performance, was attributed to subscriber expansion in fixed wireless solutions, supported by the affordable, flexible home broadband bundles plus the increasing popularity of HomePrepaid Wi-Fi. Total home broadband subscriber base now stands at over 1.7 million, up 22% from a year ago and around 63% are fixed wireless subscribers.
Moreover, corporate data business showed a notable 16% year-on-year growth from the P2.7 billion revenues from same period of 2018. This was mainly from internet and domestic services coupled with the 5% higher circuit count.
Globe’s total operating expenses and subsidy2 amounted to P16.1 billion for the period, or 1% higher year- on-year.
Consolidated EBITDA closed the first three months of 2019 with a total of P19.9 billion, up 24% versus last year, as this period’s topline gains fully offset the slight increase in expenses. EBITDA margin was at 55% this period compared to 50% from a year ago. Net income stood at P6.7 billion, 44% higher from a year ago, mainly due to the robust EBITDA growth, offsetting depreciation charges and non-operating expenses booked for the period just ended.Depreciation expenses remained high this period given Globe’s continued network expansion and acceleration of its LTE and broadband rollout. Core net income, which excludes the impact of non-recurring charges, and foreign exchange and mark-to-market charges, stood at P6.7 billion, 40% increase from same period of 2018.
President and CEO statement
Ernest L. Cu, President and CEO of Globe Telecom Inc., commented:
“I am delighted to report another remarkable performance for the first three months of 2019 with revenues and margins growing beyond our expectations. As we continue to invest in our LTE network, we are also excited with the growth opportunities of our 5G commercial pilot launch in June this year. Through this launch, we will be able to offer our customers a whole new ecosystem of devices to enhance the way they experience data to the home. This is in line with our proven strategy of making our customers a priority, by providing them a superior digital and network experience, despite all the industry challenges that we face ahead.”
For 2019, we are confident in our ability to maintain this strong growth momentum with the aggressive investments in the network, coupled with the evolving lifestyle bundles that aim to strongly influence the digital life of Filipinos. We believe this would allow full year 2019 revenues to increase by high single- digits from 2018 levels. Likewise, EBITDA margin is expected to end around 50% for 2019, as margins would be continuously impacted by the increasingcontribution of the lower-margin data-related products, countered by our continued efforts in managing costs.”
Recent Developments:
In compliance with the directive of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Globe will move the implementation of 8-digit telephone numbers in Greater Metro Manila to October 6, 2019 to give local banks and credit card companies ample time to prepare. The NTC issued an advisory, ordering local telecommunication companies to move the migration date to October 6, 2019 from March 18, 2019. This was after the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) and the Credit Card Association of the Philippines (CCAP) filed their respective petitions to postponethe migration to a later date to provide banks and credit card companies sufficient time to implement the necessary changes to their operations and systems.
Lastly, our Board of Directors approved in its meeting today, the declaration of the second quarter 2019 cash dividend of P22.75 per common share payable on May 31, 2019 to shareholders on record as of May 20, 2019.
